Lyrics
Verse 1
When I am in darkness, You make a way before me,
You are my light, You are my light.
When I am broken, You are the One that makes me whole,
You are my Healer.
Chorus
My Saviour, my Deliverer,
You are my God, You are my all in all.
My first love, so full of kindness,
You are my Lord, forever I cling to You.
Verse 2
When I am afraid, You are the strength and hope I need,
You’re my strong tower.
When I am thirsty, You are the One I run to drink from,
You are the river of life.
Bridge
Your loving arms surround me,
Your endless love confounds me,
And I can never, never,
Give of myself enough.
Behind the song
‘My Saviour’ was written after reflection on a period of ill health I had some years ago. Many nights I would wake gripped with fear. One night particularly stands out in mind when I awoke to find a dark shadow in my bedroom. The only words that can describe what I sensed that night was the ‘valley of the shadow of death’ from Psalm 23.
In those dark times, I would desperately call on the name of Jesus and repeat scriptures to myself to remind myself of God’s love, care and that I was His son. Each time, the darkness would leave and be replaced by a distinct sense of His love, peace and nearness.
The words of this song were inspired by those experiences of finding God as my Saviour and Deliverer in the midst of those dark nights. I experienced His loving arms and endless love at those times.
1 Jn 4:18 says, ‘His perfect love casts out fear’. If you suffer from fear and worry then be encouraged: God really can make a way where there seems to be no way. Cling to Him and He will comfort you, help you and bring peace in the storm.
